What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure provides an extra step during the online payment process to ensure that only you, the cardholder, use your card. Also known as Verified by Visa or MasterCard Securecode.

If your bank is not pre-registered, the 3D Secure allows you to enter your previously selected PIN generated after pre-registering for 3D Secure at your bank - helping your bank to know it is you
shopping online.

If your bank is registered, the 3D Secure allows you to enter a One Time Pin sent by the bank via SMS or email - helping your bank to know it is you shopping online.

Why do we have 3D Secure?

Banks and eCommerce merchants are implementing 3D Secure to help protect you, the cardholder, against unauthorised use of your card when shopping online at 3D secure merchants.

3D Secure allows you to authenticate yourself while making an online payment, therefore minimising the risk of someone using your card fraudulently.

What are the benefits of 3D Secure?

Online shopping is already very secure with high levels of security and encryption whenever you use your card (debit, prepaid, credit).

3D Secure is the next layer up of security whereby your card (debit, prepaid, credit) is further protected from any unauthorised use and fraud.

So you can shop in total confidence safe in the knowledge
that your card is protected at all times.

How do you sign up?
  1. You do not need to sign up if your bank’s MasterCard or Visa is 3D Secure enabled. The 3D Secure information is automatically sent by your bank as an SMS to your mobile phone also as an email, to complete your transaction.
  2. If your bank’s MasterCard or Visa is not 3D Secure enabled, please contact your bank immediately. With
the activation code and information provided by your bank, you can register and obtain your MasterCard
Secure Code or Verified by Visa Pin.
How does it work?
  1. If your bank is enrolled for 3D Secure, an OTP is sent by your bank via SMS or email to complete your transaction.
  2. If your bank is not enrolled, please contact your bank.
What if I don’t want to activate my card (debit, prepaid, credit) for 3D Secure?

Authenticating online transactions with 3D Secure is a regulatory requirement by the Central Bank of Nigeria. It will be useful to obtain it to complete an online transaction successfully.
